An actual report on Knitting! FO's to report!

I have an FO! (that is a Finished Object for you non-knitters reading this) It is a Market Bag for a friend who needed one with a longer strap to wear over her shoulder rather than holding it in her hand.

I also managed to take some pictures of some other knitting I have done or are WIP's (works in progress) as opposed to UFO's..(unfinished objects)... she laughs... It is a very fine line between WIP and UFO...

One is my old friend Filey from AS "Fisherman's Knits". I made this 11 years ago and it's still going strong... though as you will see from the photo - it has faded quite considerably compared to the gauge swatch which I found while cleaning out my junk drawer. Of all places to find it!

Of course, Figaro the cat also decided he liked the sweater too - and the camera...

So, some other WIP's (thinking positively) - here's a scarf (something... not really sure what this will ultimately turn out to be) that I was playing around with a new (to me) cable. I realized my mistake after I had gotten through about three inches of it... see if you can figure out where I went wrong with my pattern... (hint - it's with the flanking cables not the main cable)

I also have to finish off this cool pillow - free Rowan gift for being a subscriber. My somewhat inept but fun tribute to Kaffe Fassett. I need to get more polyfil or whatever to stuff it with as it is not a normal size/shape pillow. Not sure what I'll do with it as nothing in my house is remotely any of these colors! Probably a good gift for someone!

So, although I totally procrastinated on working on my two seriously outstanding projects, I did do something productive yesterday. It was a good Sunday - my NY Jets were playing at home... sigh, Brett Favre! and it was so humid out so I stayed in the A/C. I have had this lovely gray alpaca yarn some friends brought me back from Peru and needed a somewhat mindless project to work on while watching football! I looked through all my books and found one - 'Fennel' from Rowan 24 (1998) which is a simple V-Neck in Stockinette Stitch. I started it around 2 pm - gauge swatch included and look how much I've gotten done -- even on US 3's! I am going to really try to discipline myself to work only on this until it's done and see how long it takes me!

I'll keep my progress updated as I can. I have some small events this week but enough to keep me busy!

Alas, I made more progress than my Jets did. They lost to those lousy Patriots... even though Brett did look good and play well for the most part. A friend called me to rib me about them losing... at least it's early in the season... I still have hope! Just like my Mets... this fall is better than last year when I was so broken-hearted.
Happy knitting to all!

My Gosh!! That Filey has really faded! It's a gorgeous knit and will never go out of fashion, a tribute to your finishing skills as well! I love the bag, it looks great with the longer handle and so much more practical too! I love the V-neck - super simple and beautiful in the color you chose, I'll be watching to see if you get it done within your time limit!
hugs,

Some Writing

Sad Scene of Children Playing (originally written 10/25/93)

The filthy, trash-laden streets are the children’s playground. From the alley, an overpowering smell of rotting garbage permeates the entire block, trash and food scraps overflowing onto the ground to be picked over by mangy stray animals and desperate homeless people. Laundry is strung between the tenements, looking not a whole lot cleaner than it was to begin with.

Whipping around the corner, a group of youths – four or five of them, ages six through twelve – search for excitement. It is extremely difficult to determine the boys from the girls. Winter is upon them and they dress in layers of tattered, ragged, soiled hand-me-downs, grubby, threadbare hats on each head. Their faces, covered with the grime of the city, give a haunting look – a look of innocence betrayed, of shattered dreams, of incredible hardness. Malnourished, one of the gang clutches a prize – a piece of rock candy. He holds it high in the air while the others push and shove, pummel him, leap in the air trying desperately to claim the prize for themselves. In an instant, the candy is shaken loose and tumbles onto the pavement – splintering into a hundred pieces. Scrambling furiously, the urchins wrestle for a sliver of the heavenly confection.

The children are only partially satisfied with this, restlessness reigns supreme. A slightly built boy, the one always picked on, pounces upon a crushed tin can, kicking it down the street. Another scrawny child, perhaps a girl of seven or eight, sprints down the block after the can. The children spread out in a pattern of some sort (like a ballet), a few on the sidewalk, one covering the entrance of the alley, and two others in the street itself. From one of the grimy windows above, an exhausted woman yells out at the kids in the street below – she fears they will come to some harm but cannot express this concern adequately. A particularly bratty, sullen girl shrieks back, “Mind your own business, old hag!” Just then, from around the corner, the neighborhood policeman approaches, spying the truant children playing. The scrawny boy shouts out, and the children speed down the alleyway, scrambling up waiting fire escapes, shaking off the cop’s pursuit.
